Glossary of Terms

Technologies

Aerospace	Aerospace collectively refers to the atmosphere and outer space. Aerospace technology, such as aerospace engineering, aeronautics, astronautics, avionics, and space transportation, have a multitude of commercial, industrial, and military applications.
Antennas	An antenna or aerial is an interface between radio waves propagating through space and electric currents moving in metal conductors. Antennas come in varying sizes and are normally coupled to a transmitter or receiver.
Automotives	Automobiles are wheeled motor vehicles used for transportation.
Aviation	Aviation is the activities surrounding mechanical flight and the aircraft industry. Aircrafts include fixed-wing and rotary-wing types, morphable wings, wing-less lifting bodies, as well as lighter-than-air craft such as hot air balloons and airships.
Batteries	A battery is a source of electric power consisting of one or more electrochemical cells. Batteries come with external connections for powering all kinds of modern electronic products.
Big Data	Big data refers to the collection and analysis of extremely large or complex data sets. Key concepts to big data include volume, variety, and velocity.
Blockchain / Cryptocurrency / NFT	Blockchain is a system of recording information in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system. A blockchain is essentially a digital ledger of transactions that is duplicated and distributed across the entire network of computer systems on the blockchain. A cryptocurrency takes advantage of blockchain decentralization through the form of digital tokens or “coins” that may be used as a form of currency. A non-fungible token (NFT) is a unique and non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a digital ledger. NFTs can be associated with easily-reproducible items such as photos, videos, audio, and other types of digital files as unique items, and use blockchain technology to give the NFT a public proof of ownership.
Circuits	Circuits combine individual electronic components, such as resistors, transistors, capacitors, inductors, and diodes, with conductive wires or traces through which electric current can flow. Electronic circuits are what enable data transfers, signal amplification, and computation.
Consumer Products / Services	Consumer products are products that are bought by individuals or households for personal use.
Clean Energy / Technology	Clean energy, or renewable energy, which is energy that is collected from renewable resources that are naturally replenished, including sources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. These types of energy leave a smaller carbon footprint on the Earth when contrasted with fossil fuels.
Data Security / Authentication / Encryption	Data security includes data encryption, authentication, hashing, tokenization, and key management practices that protect data across all applications and platforms. Encryption is typically done locally, with everything on a user’s device, whereas authentication typically involves access to a remote system.
Data Storage	Data storage refers to magnetic, optical, or mechanical media that records and preserves digital information for ongoing or future operations.
Digital Media / Entertainment	Digital media means any communication media that operate with the use of any of various encoded machine-readable data formats. Digital media can be created, viewed, distributed, modified, listened to, and preserved on a digital electronics device.
Digital Signal Processing	Digital signal processing is the use of digital processing, such as by computers or more specialized digital signal processors, to perform a wide variety of signal processing operations.
Displays	Displays are devices that provide a visual presentation of data. Both displays and sensors are frequently coupled to processors or other electronics.
Electronic Gaming	An electronic game is any game that uses any form of electronics to create an interactive system with which a player can play.
Hardware / PCB	Hardware includes physical parts of electronic devices, such as the processor and motherboard. A printed circuit board (PCB) is a type of hardware used to affix and connect electrical components.
Image / Video Processing	Image and video processing involves the use of a digital computer to process digital image and video signals through an algorithm.
Information Technology	Information technology is the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical devices, infrastructure, and processes to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data.
Intelligent Vehicles	An intelligent vehicle is a vehicle capable of taking information about its state and/or the environment, processing that information, and making decisions, providing information, and/or acting on that process.
Internet of Things (IoT)	The Internet of things describes physical objects that are embedded with sensors, processing ability, software, and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet or other communications networks.
LED Lighting / Display	LED, which stands for light emitting diode, are lighting products produce light up to 90% more efficiently than traditional incandescent light bulbs.
Location Services / Positioning	A location-based service is a general term denoting software services which use geographic data and information to provide services or information to users. Location services can be used in a variety of contexts, such as health, indoor object search, entertainment, work, personal life, etc.
Machine Learning	Machine learning is a method of data analysis that automates analytical model building. It is a branch of artificial intelligence based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify patterns, and make decisions with minimal human intervention.
Manufacturing	Manufacturing refers to the processing of raw materials or parts into finished goods through the use of tools, human labor, machinery, and chemical processing.
Materials	A material is a substance or mixture of substances that constitutes an object. Materials can be pure or impure, living or non-living matter. Materials can be classified based on their physical and chemical properties, or on their geological origin or biological function.
Mechanical Systems	A mechanical system is a set of physical components that convert an input motion and force into a desired output motion and force. Mechanical systems have at least three elements: input, process and output.
Medical Devices	A medical device is any device intended to be used for medical purposes.
Medical Imaging	Medical imaging refers to several different technologies that are used to view the human body in order to diagnose, monitor, or treat medical conditions.
Memory	Memory refers to devices that retain digital data. Memory can be volatile, which loses its stored data when power to the memory is turned off, or non-volatile, which preserves data stored during periods when power is turned off.
Metallurgy	Metallurgy is a domain of materials science and engineering that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their inter-metallic compounds, and their mixtures, which are known as alloys.
Mobile Devices	A mobile device is a general term for any type of handheld computer.
Nanotechnology / Nanomaterials	Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on a near-atomic scale to produce new structures, materials, and devices. Nanomaterials are defined as those things that have a length scale between 1 and 100 nanometers.
Networks / Internet	A network is a collection of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices, peripherals, or other devices connected to allow data sharing. The Internet is an example of a network.
Optical Systems	An optical system consists of a succession of elements, which may include lenses, mirrors, light sources, detectors, projection screens, reflecting prisms, dispersing devices, filters and thin films, and fiber-optics bundles.
Personal Computing	A personal computer is a multi-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and price make it feasible for individual use.
Processors	A processor (CPU) is the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic instructions that drive a computer.
Remote Monitoring	Remote monitoring and management include the process of supervising and controlling IT systems by means of locally installed agents that can be accessed by a management service provider. Remote monitoring can be used in medical applications to review and manage patient information to apply remote patient treatments.
Robotics	Robotics involves the design, construction, operation, and use of robots.
Satellite Communication	Satellite communication refers to any communication link that involves the use of an artificial satellite in its propagation path.
Semiconductors / ASICs	Semiconductors are materials which have a conductivity between conductors (generally metals) and nonconductors or insulators (such as most ceramics). An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is an integrated circuit chip customized for a particular use, rather than intended for general-purpose use.
Sensors	Sensors are devices that detect, record, indicate, measure, or otherwise respond to events or changes in its environment. Both displays and sensors are frequently coupled to processors or other electronics.
Software / Middleware / Firmware	Software is a collection of instructions that tell a computer how to work. Middleware is a type of computer software that provides services to software applications beyond those available from the operating system. Firmware is a specific class of computer software that provides the low-level control for a device’s specific hardware.
Streaming Media	Streaming is a method of consuming multimedia that is delivered and consumed in a continuous manner from a source, with little or no intermediate storage in network elements.
Switches and Routers	Routers and switches are network connecting devices that forwards data packets between computer networks.
Telecommunication	Telecommunication is the transmission of information by various types of technologies over wire, radio, optical, or other electromagnetic systems.
TV / Set top box / Cable	Systems that receives and converts or decodes digital signals to a viewable television signal.
Wearables	Wearable technology, also known as “wearables,” is a category of electronic devices that can be worn as accessories, embedded in clothing, implanted in the user’s body, or even tattooed on the skin.
Wireless / Mobile Communication	Wireless communication is the transfer of information between two or more points that do not use an electrical conductor as a medium by which to perform the transfer. The most common wireless technologies use radio waves.

Chemical Engineering	Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with chemical production and the manufacture of products through chemical processes.
Chemistry	Chemistry is the scientific study of the properties and behavior of matter.
Diagnostics	Medical diagnostics involve tests and processes for determining which disease or condition explains a person’s symptoms and signs. The information required for diagnosis is typically collected from a history and physical examination of the person seeking medical care.
Digital Health	Digital health is a discipline that includes digital care programs, technologies with health, healthcare, living, and society to enhance the efficiency of healthcare delivery and to make medicine more personalized and precise.
DNA Sequencing	DNA sequencing is the process of determining the nucleic acid sequence – the order of nucleotides in DNA. It includes any method or technology that is used to determine the order of the four bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine.
Drug Delivery	Drug delivery refers to approaches, formulations, manufacturing techniques, storage systems, and technologies involved in transporting a pharmaceutical compound to its target site to achieve a desired therapeutic effect.
Electronic Health	Eletronic health involves keeping an Electronic Health Record (EHR), which is an electronic version of a patient’s medical history maintained by a provider over time. The EHR may include all key administrative and clinically relevant data to that patient’s care, including demographics, progress notes, problems, medications, vital signs, past medical history, immunizations, laboratory data and radiology reports. The EHR automates access to information and has the potential to streamline a clinician’s workflow, and further has the ability to support other care-related activities directly or indirectly through various interfaces, including evidence-based decision support, quality management, and outcomes reporting.
Gene Editing	Gene editing, or genome editing, is a group of technologies that give scientists the ability to change an organism’s DNA.
Gene Therapy	Gene therapy is a technique that modifies a person’s genes to treat or cure disease. Gene therapies can work by replacing a disease-causing gene with a healthy copy of the gene, inactivating a disease-causing gene that is not functioning properly, or introducing a new or modified gene into the body to help treat a disease.
Generics	A generic drug is a pharmaceutical drug that contains the same chemical substance as a drug that was originally protected by chemical patents.
Genetics	Genetics is a branch of biology concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms.
Genomics	Genomics is an interdisciplinary field of biology focusing on the structure, function, evolution, mapping, and editing of genomes. A genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA, including all of its genes as well as its hierarchical, three-dimensional structural configuration.
Medicinal Chemistry	Medicinal chemistry involves the design, chemical synthesis, and development of pharmaceutical agents or bio-active molecules. Medicinal chemistry is an interdisciplinary field and including chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, pharmacology, and various other biological specialties.
Molecular Biology	Molecular biology is the branch of biology that seeks to understand the molecular basis of biological activity in and between cells, including molecular synthesis, modification, mechanisms, and interactions.
Organic Chemistry	Organic chemistry is the study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of organic carbon-containing compounds.
Peptides	Peptides are short chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Typically, peptides are distinguished from proteins by their shorter length, although the cut-off number of amino acids for defining a peptide and protein can be arbitrary.
Personalized Medicine	Personalized medicine, or precision medicine, uses an individual’s genetic profile to guide decisions made in regard to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
Pharmaceutical Compositions	Pharmaceutical compositions are the result of a process of formulation in which different chemical substances, including an active drug, are combined to produce a final medicinal product.
Pharmaceuticals	Pharmaceuticals are any kinds of drugs used for medicinal purposes.
Proteomics	Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteomes – a set of proteins produced in an organism, system, or biological context.
RNA Therapeutics	RNA therapeutics are a class of medications based on ribonucleic acid (RNA).
Small Molecules	Small molecules are low molecular weight organic compounds that may regulate a biological process, with a size on the order of 1 nm. Many drugs are small molecules.
Stem Cell	Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have the potential to develop into many different types of specialized cells in the body. Unlike other cells, stem cells can divide and renew themselves over a long time, and thus serve as a repair system for the body. There are two main types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.
Synthetic Chemistry	Chemical synthesis involves one or more compounds (known as reagents or reactants) that will experience a transformation when subjected to certain conditions. Chemical synthesis, particularly organic chemical synthesis, is often employed to develop new compounds.
